Fundamental to my work is an exploration of the connection between human beings and nature and of the relationship between the external world and ourselves as subjects. From clay emerge sculptural objects that appear like fragments from a mystical world. They are fragile and reveal our vulnerability, fragments of dream worlds that convey the idea of a world in symbiosis and make visible the beauty of interwoven realms.
My works are thematically situated in the field of tension between reality and dream, between transcendence and materiality. The transcendent is understood as part of nature and is depicted within landscape motifs and through scenes that appear almost magical. The bringing together of microcosm and macrocosm is a symbolic aspect of my work that simultaneously establishes a formal framework. I work at the threshold between surface and space, between natural, floral, and geometrically constructed forms, which often recall architectural details or buildings. In this encounter, human made space meets the space claiming force of nature emerging from within.
In the reliefs, roots, trees, shrubs, and climbing plants grow out of the clay and into the surrounding space. The potential of the earth’s interior breaks through the surface and appears as a fragment of the infinitely branching forces of the underworld that underlie the visible world. This makes clay, as a part of the ground itself, the symbolic point of departure.
In a time in which we are confronted with unsettling realities and must position ourselves in relation to existential questions, my work seeks to draw attention to something essential: our relationship to ourselves, to our inner world, and to our relationship with the environment, the complex and reactive system of nature that forms the basis of our lives. Through my artistic practice, I therefore create a focus on our origins and open up a space for hope and contemplation. Nature and culture are interwoven. When we grant stones, trees, and the environment in general a soul, they become more real and more valuable to us. This is far more sincere than viewing them merely as lifeless matter or as resources. In my work I am not simply searching for symbols, but for meaning.
